Summary: The Parsippany-Troy Hills Public Library System is looking for a Part Time Librarian to join the dedicated team of professionals in our Children’s Department.  Responsibilities of the position include providing customer service, reference and online reader’s advisory, development and implementation of creative and innovative children’s programming, and community and local school outreach.

About the Library: The Parsippany-Troy Hills Public Library System serves a population of 56,000 with a Main Library and two branches. Located in Morris County, NJ, Parsippany is a vibrant and diverse community which has often been recognized as one of the best places to live in the U.S.

Qualifications: ALA-Accredited master's Degree in Library Science, a NJ Librarian Certificate issued by Thomas Edison State University (or eligibility to acquire certificate within 6 months of hire date).

Other Important Information: New Jersey residency is required within one year of date of hire. Successful completion of a criminal background check is also required. Initial appointment

Position Title – Part Time Children’s Librarian
 

Location – Main Library 449 Halsey Road, Parsippany, NJ 07054
 

Department – Children’s
 

Supervisor – Head of Children’s Services
 

Salary and Benefits – $25.00/hour, and includes sick, vacation, and holiday pay, and the position is eligible for enrollment in the New Jersey Defined Contribution Retirement Program.
 

Schedule – Up to 28 hours/week, and will include at least one evening a week and every other Saturday.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons in person and virtually.
  • Provide reference and online reader’s advisory service.
  • Familiarization with children’s authors and reading trends.
  • Provide customers with instruction in the proper use of library resources.
  • Prepares children’s book displays that highlight the collection/special holidays and celebrations.
  • Shelving book and shelf-reading materials to ensure they are in the correct spot.
  • Makes recommendations for new materials.
  • Examines incoming children’s material to maintain familiarity with the Collection.
  • Responsible for weeding the collection in a timely manner.
  • Develops and/or conducts organized, entertaining, informative, creative, and age appropriate programs and crafts.
  • Participates in visits to schools, pre-schools and other organizations.
  • Participate in staff committees and attend scheduled staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Maintains effective working relationships with coworkers, patrons, school employees, and others in the community.
  • Contributes ideas and solutions to problems.
  • Ability to create, develop, and implement engaging programs for children.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, knowledge of Polaris and MAIN a plus.

 

Job Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS degree preferred, will consider library school student.
  • Professional Librarian Certificate or ability to obtain one within 6 months of being hired.
  • Experience working with Children.
