Part Time Senior Library Assistant – Teen Specialist

The Glen Ridge Public Library is seeking an energetic and creative person to join us as a part-time senior library assistant in our very active youth services department.  We are looking for someone who enjoys serving children of all ages, but in particular upper elementary, middle, and high school students.  The ideal candidate will take the lead in working with these age groups to plan and provide programming; maintain the young adult collection; and act as liaison with the middle and high school.  The person in the position must be highly creative and relatable to kids and teens; have a knowledge of pop-culture; be familiar with young adult and elementary aged books/authors; and be comfortable with computers and technology. In addition, this position performs all duties associated with circulation and customer service in the youth services department. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Planning and providing weekly in-house programming to various age groups, focusing on elementary, middle, and high school students, e.g., Teen Advisory Board; after school reading clubs; after hours programming for middle/high school students; etc. 
  • Maintaining the young adult collection, including making purchases; processing material; and creating engaging book displays. The Young Adult collection includes general fiction, nonfiction, manga, and graphic novels.
  • Outreach and act as liaison to middle and high school 
  • Contributing to our welcoming and friendly atmosphere while providing patrons with outstanding customer service
  • Assisting with all aspects of library circulation including check in/out; placing holds and requests; managing patron accounts; handling fines and fees; shelving material; and searching the catalog
  • Answering and routing phone calls
  • Other duties as assigned

Education, experience, abilities: High School graduate or equivalent degree required. Must be highly creative with the ability to plan, budget, promote, and execute programs that are of high interest to children and teens; meet deadlines and multitask in a busy environment; develop a rapport with children, teens, and families; possess knowledge of children’s and young adult genres, authors, and titles; adopt a community engagement mindset to advocate library services and collections to various age groups; willing to learn and grow professionally to gain knowledge and skills to best serve and connect with children and teens; and possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication. Excellent customer service skills, flexibility, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues are a must. Ideal candidate enjoys working with children and teens, is patient, friendly, courteous and energetic with a can-do positive attitude.  

A background working in BCCLS libraries is a plus.  Prior experience working with children and/or teens is highly desirable. 

This position is a 20-hour a week position which includes one evening per week; and rotational Saturday hours, and occasional after hours programming.  Starting salary of $21.00 per hour. Schedule: Monday 9am-2pm, Tuesday 1pm-5pm, Wednesday 12pm-8pm, Thursday 1pm-5pm; rotational Saturday full day and lunch coverage shifts, and occasional evenings for after hours programming.  Additional hours may be available on an as-needed basis.
