The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library in Sewell, NJ seeks applicants for a part-time Children’s Library Assistant to work a range of twenty-five to twenty-nine hours per week.  The schedule will include a variety of daytime, evening, and regularly scheduled weekend hours throughout the year, including summer months.  This position reports to the Children’s Librarian. 

The person in this position is primarily responsible for assisting children and their caregivers in the children’s library with selecting books and other library materials.  Other duties include registering patrons for programs, retrieving holds, shelfreading, and reshelving library materials.  The position also requires maintaining statistics, assisting with thematic displays, and ensuring that patrons are adhering to library rules of conduct.  

The person in this position must be able to operate a computer with proficiency, must have the maturity to work independently, and must be extremely customer-service oriented.  Ability to prioritize job duties and pay attention to details is necessary.  Knowledge of the developmental stages of youth is strongly preferred.  Familiarity with literature appropriate for youth from birth through age twelve is imperative.

This position requires a high school diploma.  Experience working in a public library and using the Dewey Decimal Classification System ideal.  It is highly desirable that the person in this position has significant prior work experience in a setting where they were responsible for serving children and their caregivers.  The selected candidate, if not a New Jersey resident, will be required to establish New Jersey residency within a year of appointment in accordance with the New Jersey First Act. 

Pay is $13.00 per hour. Paid time off includes ten hours of vacation per year and accrued sick time based on the requirements of the New Jersey Paid Sick Leave Law.  This position requires participation in the defined Contribution Retirement Program pension system.  This calculation is 5.5% of the base salary with a 3% employer match.  The pension system includes a life insurance policy.
