The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library of Washington Township in Sewell, NJ seeks candidates for the position of Part-Time Children’s Library Assistant to work a range of 20-29 hours per week.  The schedule may include some daytime hours and will include evening hours. Working regularly scheduled Saturdays and/or Sundays throughout the year, including the summer, is mandatory. Please note that this is not a seasonal position.  Anticipated start date is mid to late June.  This position reports to the Children’s Librarian.  Pay is $14.50 per hour.  Paid time off includes ten hours of vacation per year if the candidate works a minimum of twenty hours per week on average.  All part-time library staff are eligible for accrued sick time based on the requirements of the New Jersey Paid Sick Leave Law.   The selected candidate must enroll in the DCRP pension system, which is a mandatory payroll deduction of 5.5% of base salary. 

Responsibilities:

Greet and assist patrons who visit the children’s library and assist with readers’ advisory and technology

Assist with organizing supplies for library programs

Prepare thematic and seasonal displays of books and other library materials

Search for and process hold requests and pull holds as requested by patrons

Shelve and shelfread library materials

Search for lost or missing items and retrieve library materials for discarding

Understand and uphold library policies and procedures

Tactfully and politely ensure that library patrons are adhering to Library Code of Conduct as needed

Perform other duties as assigned at direction of supervisor

Requirements:

High school diploma

Competent at alphabetical filing and Dewey Decimal System Classification system of filing

Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn new software quickly

At least one year working in a paid public service position, preferably in a responsible role of assisting children and their caregivers

Preferred:

Flexibility with schedule and ability to work additional hours during staff absences

Prior experience working in a public library
