Overview

The Development Officer is the central fundraising officer of MAIN. Primary responsibilities, in collaboration with the Executive Director, include donor cultivation and stewardship as well as building and maintaining relationships with relevant external and internal constituents.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create new and on-going strategies to initiate and meet fundraising goals, in collaboration with the Executive Director and internal stakeholders
  • Organize and execute details for a successful annual fundraising campaign
  • Meet and exceed established budgeted goals included in strategic fundraising plan
  • Identify, cultivate, and solidify partnership and programmatic opportunities for the Executive Director to build relationships
  • Develop solicitation materials and strategies for Executive Director to utilize when speaking with prospects
  • Research funding opportunities, appropriately managing submission timelines and deliverables
  • Draft grant proposals and supporting documents based on funding requirements
  • Plan and manage initiatives and activities to promote community awareness of MAIN
  • Maintain relationships with member libraries, focused on promoting MAIN initiatives and brand awareness
  • Ensure proper coordination for donor acknowledgements and prospect/mailing list maintenance
  • Write press releases and promotional materials for fundraising outreach and events.
  • Ensures donor information is kept confidential and current
  • Ensure special events are properly documented via video/photography
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports on activities and outcomes to Executive Director
  • Participate in community and business networking events in order to facilitate relationships
  • Attend internal meetings as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, plus additional related college courses or professional training.
  • 5+ years’ experience working in a nonprofit organization’s development or fundraising department, or related experience
  • Experience working in tandem with marketing or public relations departments, or related experience

Required Specialized Skills & Traits:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, public speaking, and organization skills
  • Proficient in using donor database and CRMs
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, & PowerPoint
  • History of taking initiative and trying new things
  • Possess a strategic, analytical mind
  • Ability to work independently, in a team environment, and from home
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Ability to present ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Preferred Specialized Experience & Skills:

  • Previous work, volunteer experience in, or passion for a library or library-related organization
  • Social media savvy
  • Understands how to adapt operations into a virtual, Zoom-based environment
  • Familiarity or proficiency with graphic design
  • Familiarity or proficiency with web design

Compensation

  • Hourly wage commensurate with experience and skills, and will fall in the $40/hr - $50/hr range
    • Estimating 12-15 hours of work per week

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

The position is scheduled for a variable workweek and requires the ability to work on a flexible schedule. MAIN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is not subject to the “New Jersey First” state residency requirements.

Work is performed primarily remotely or in a busy office environment at 16 Wing Drive in Cedar Knolls while sitting at a desk or computer station, or while standing for extended periods of time. Periodic or extensive work from home may be necessary.
