A part time library assistant position is available in the Circulation Department of the Allwood Branch. All pages, library assistants, and other non-librarian staff may apply. We are looking for someone who is:

  • Comfortable learning and using new technology, especially as it relates to the library;
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills;
  • Interested in promoting library services and programs to the public;
  • Excited to work in a busy department as it continues to grow and evolve.

 

Library assistants work in the circulation department managing patron accounts, issuing library cards according to Clifton and PALS Plus policies, checking various types of items in and out to users, collecting fines and fees, answering questions related to library and PALS Plus consortium usage, assisting patrons with simple computer usage, shelving library materials, packaging and labeling library materials for shipping and unpacking and routing in deliveries, and assisting the Circulation Department with other needs as necessary. You must be able to work both independently and as a team member. Strong computer and technology skills are required. Excellent customer service skills are essential. Flexibility, adaptability, creative thinking, and willingness to try new things are very important as we evolve the library to serve changing community needs.

 

The position requires alternating 12 hours per week and 15 hours per week, for a total of 27 hours total over a two-week period, including nights and weekends. Flexibility in scheduling is a plus as we adapt to changing coverage needs.

 

A general schedule for the position might currently include:

  Schedule 1: Monday 10-2; Thursday 2-6; Friday 2-6

  Schedule 2: Monday 11-2; Tuesday 10-2; Thursday 2-6; Friday 2-6

 

Starting salary is $16.28 per hour and includes paid sick, vacation and personal time on a work-to-earn basis. You must be at least 16 years old to apply. New hires age 18 and over require a criminal background check. Actual starting date for new hires will be determined based on results and qualifications. You will also have an opportunity for extra work on a separate, seasonal Sunday schedule at our Main Library when Sunday hours resume in the future.
