Provides reference and other library services for the general public. Performs other related duties as required.  

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the public in use of library resources and equipment.

  • Assist users in selecting materials for informational or entertainment purposes.

  • Instruct patrons on how to locate information and maximize the use of resources.

  • Answer basic reference questions.

  • Comprehend, analyze, and interpret rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Library.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the resources and services provided through the New Jersey State Library and BCCLS.

  • Answer questions on library organization, holdings, policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned by Adult Services supervisor.

  • Assist with special projects as needed.

  • Assist with clerical/administrative and public relations work as needed.

  • Ability to process monetary transactions at the Reference Desk.

  • Prepare and implement content and arrangement of library material for displays, exhibits and special library programs as directed by the Adult Services supervisor.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Commitment to working on Sundays.

  • Maintain good housekeeping practices and perform in a safe and effective manner so as not to inflict injury to self or others. Inform proper authority of any hazardous situations in the work environment.

  • Clearly communicate and enforce the policies and procedures adopted by the Montclair Public Library.

  • Support the Library’s mission, vision and values, as well as commitment to the community served by the Library.

  • Ability to take direction from librarians in the Department and to work independently, if necessary, as directed by the Adult Services supervisor.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Communication skills: effectively communicate ideas and information both in written and oral form.

  • Reading ability: effectively read and understand information contained in memoranda, reports and bulletins, etc.

  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions: effectively follow instructions from supervisor, verbally and in written form.

  • Time management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.

EXPECTED COMPETENCIES

  • Proficiency in using computers and other office equipment such as copy machines, printers, and scanners.

  • Excellent customer service skills. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public and to maintain effective working relationships with other library staff.

  • Ability to maintain established library records and files.

  • High ability to organize material and attention to detail. The ability to handle details with accuracy and completeness is essential.

  • Ability to learn quickly from oral, written and/or demonstrated instructions.

  • Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues and patrons.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Library’s mission, goals and objectives.

  • Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret regulations, policies and procedures of the library and explain them to the public.

  • Ability and willingness to continue to develop additional skills and library knowledge through on-the-job training, classes, or online tutorials.

  • Ability to learn and utilize the full spectrum of the BCCLS resources, including the web catalog, digital resources, ebooks, downloadable materials, and web subject guides.

  • Desire to work in an environment that is inclusive and respectful.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Strong knowledge of computers as well as the ability to provide direct assistance with technology related issues.

  • Some library courses, and/or library or other applicable experience desired. Familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System.

  • BCCLS/Polaris experience a plus.

  • Previous customer service experience is required.

SCHEDULE AND SALARY

Sundays 1-6 p.m., $17.37 per hour
