The Piscataway Public Library provides opportunities for all members of the
community to learn and connect. The Library is seeking to hire a creative and
enthusiastic Supervising Librarian to lead our Adult Services Department. This role
requires an individual who will foster an environment of teamwork and collaboration
that embraces change and excellent customer service. The successful candidate will
be responsible for the development and coordination of all Adult Services, including
on-site at the Kennedy and Westergard Branches, virtual services, and outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision and scheduling, training, mentoring, and assigning tasks for all
    department personnel.
  • Conducts performance evaluations for all departmental staff and promotes
    professional development among staff.
  • Participates in the recruitment and hiring of department personnel.
  • Provides reference services to all ages at the information/reference desks.
  • Plans, coordinates, and participates in the development and execution of a
    variety of programs for adults.
  • Coordinates collection development within the department, and orders
    specific print and non-print collections.
  • Sets priorities for customer service excellence within the department to
    support user needs.
  • Interprets and applies library policies and procedures and contributes to the
    development of new policies and procedures.
  • Cooperates and collaborates with other library departments, teams and
    administration in an effort to plan, promote and provide responsive, effective,
    and efficient library services.
  • Submits monthly and annual reports on the progress of objectives, reference
    and programming statistics, and trends in the department.
  • Approves and monitors expenditures within the department.
  • Works with Administration to implement grant funding for new and
    continuing projects.
  • Develops and launches new service initiatives.
  • Participates in outreach and represents the library at community events.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.
  • NJ Professional Librarian’s certificate or eligibility to obtain.
  • At least five years of post MLS experience. Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of successful implementation of public programs,
    ideally in a public library setting, including arts, humanities, science and
    technology (STEM), and supporting adult learners.
  • Demonstrated record of connecting with community organizations and
    partners to promote the Library and its resources.
  • Experience providing reference and readers’ services to all ages..
  • Successfully demonstrates the ability to exercise sound judgment, identify and
    assess problems and decisively implement appropriate solutions or
    recommendations.
  • Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to manage
    multiple projects or taste simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas: flexibility, initiative, teamwork
    and customer service.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively..
  • Upholds the mission, vision and values of the library.
  • Continuing education to update professional skills including participation in
    professional library associations.

Physical Requirements: Light Work

  • The ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop and crouch.
  • The ability to handle, reach for and carry materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Dexterity to operate keyboards and other office equipment.
  • Visual acuity to read print and computer screens.
  • Vocal ability to communicate clearly and courteously with customers,
    co-workers and groups outside the library.
  • The ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • The ability to travel between libraries and attend meetings in other locations.

  • New Jersey residency required pursuant to NJSA 54:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), if
    selected for this position.
  • All Piscataway Township employees are subject to the successful completion
    of a 3-month performance evaluation period.
  • Offers of employment will be conditional pending the completion of a
    criminal background check and drug screening as part of pre-employment
    procedures.
  • It is the Township’s policy that all new employees must, as a condition of
    employment, be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including up to date on
    eligible booster doses

Schedule and Compensation

  • 35 scheduled hours per week including evenings and weekends.
  • Leave time includes four weeks vacation, three personal days, and 12 sick days.
  • The annual salary is $86,130.
