PT Library Assistant-Sewell, NJ January 4, 2024

The Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library of Washington Township in Sewell, NJ (Gloucester County) seeks candidates for the position of Part-Time Library Assistant to work a range of 10-29 hours per week.  The schedule includes daytime, evening, and regularly scheduled weekend hours on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, including the summer.  Evening and weekend hours are mandatory and are not negotiable.  This position reports to the Circulation Supervisor. The selected candidate, if not a New Jersey resident, will be required to establish New Jersey residency within a year of appointment in accordance with the New Jersey First Act.  Pay is $16.39 per hour.  All part-time library staff are eligible for accrued sick time based on the requirements of the New Jersey Paid Sick Leave Law.   The selected candidate must enroll in the DCRP pension system, which is a mandatory payroll deduction of 5.5% of base salary. 

Responsibilities:

  • Providing excellent customer service at all times
  • Charging and discharging library materials while following policy and procedural guidelines
  • Issuing new library cards and renewing existing accounts
  • Searching for library materials and processing hold requests
  • Answering telephones and assisting callers as needed
  • Billing and accepting payment for library overdue fees and material charges
  • Shelving books, straightening shelves, and reading shelves
  • Processing computer guest passes and registering patrons for library programs via online software
  • Operating a cash register, photocopy machine, and a facsimile machine
  • Tactfully and politely ensuring that library patrons are adhering to Library Rules of Conduct as needed
  • Assisting with coverage at the children’s desk
  • Performing other duties as assigned at direction of supervisor

Requirements: 

  • High school diploma
  • Ability to communicate well and follow directions while being detail-oriented
  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to learn new software quickly

Preferred:

  • Flexibility with schedule and ability to work additional hours during staff absences 
  • Prior experience working in a library and using the Dewey Decimal Classification System or prior experience working with the public
  • Knowledge of and interest in reading materials and other items that may be borrowed at a public library

Youth Services/Outreach Librarian Full-Time January 3, 2024

The Monroe Township Public Library seeks an energetic, self- motivated and team-oriented Youth Services Librarian. Our new colleague will plan and present regularly scheduled programs for toddlers & preschoolers as well as creative and literacy-based programs for school age children. This individual enjoys engaging children in activities that foster curiosity and a desire to read & will engage children of all abilities and backgrounds both inside and outside of the library walls. This position reports to the Head of Youth Services.

Essential Job Responsibilities to include & not be limited to:

Programming & Services

  • Develop, plan and present innovative and engaging programs for children (up to age 17) and families including regular weekly and monthly offerings, special events/programs.
  • Provide readers’ advisory services to children and families.
  • Provide all-age reference.
  • Promotes informational literacy and facilitates learning in the library using various techniques.
  • Recommends changes in programs, services, and collections based upon new developments in the library field.
  • Communicates effectively with staff and patrons.

 

Collection Development

  • Assist with maintaining the children’s print and non-print collection in the library and on the bookmobile. 
  • Stay current with children’s and young adult literature by reading widely and keeping up with current trends in library service to children and teens.

 

Outreach & Community Relations 

  • Cultivate and maintain partnerships with local schools, childcare providers, and other youth related organizations to promote library services, reading & digital literacy. 
  • Coordinate and schedule activities, initiatives & marketing between the Youth Services Department and the Outreach Department. 
  • Play a role in the library’s community engagement efforts.
  • Ability to drive all outreach vehicles, including a 28’ Freightliner Bookmobile and 18’ van.

 

Qualifications

  • A master's degree in library science (or equivalent) from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited program. Must possess a NJ Professional Librarian Certificate or obtain the certificate upon hiring. Consideration will be given to currently enrolled MLS students.
  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Previous work experience with children in an early or elementary education environment preferred.
  • Experience presenting literacy-based and creative learning programs to children and families.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature to perform collection development and advise young readers and adults.
  • Ability to engage children of all abilities and backgrounds with a patient, enthusiastic and genuine demeanor. Ability to work with individuals of diverse populations with respect & equitable service.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at one time, take initiative and self-impose deadlines.
  • The ideal candidate should be outgoing, creative, self-motivated and possess both a positive attitude and sense of humor.

Library Bookmobile Driver Part-time January 3, 2024

The Monroe Township Public Library’s Bookmobile is a vital part of library service in the community. The 28 ft. Bookmobile visits local adult communities, schools, neighborhoods and Township events. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS TO INCLUDE AND NOT BE LIMITED TO

  1. Valid New Jersey Driver’s License with clean driving record and prior driving experience (CDL not required)
  2. Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time
  3. Working knowledge of basic computer functions
  4. Ability to lift and carry loads of several books in carrying totes, and push or pull a book cart
  5. Ability to ride in a Bookmobile and perform routine duties in a confined environment
  6. Driver should expect 3 to 4 hours of driving during the normal part-time shift 
  7. Must be able to work with all age populations, dealing effectively and tactfully with clientele
  8. Ability to climb and descend steps while loading and unloading materials weighing up to 75 lbs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Perform maintenance checks to ensure Bookmobile, van and equipment are in good working order
  2. Drive Bookmobile and van as required
  3. Keep accurate records of mileage, gas, and other records as appropriate
  4. Function as Circulation assistant to Bookmobile Program Manager, checking books in and out as needed
  5. Assist with packing up outreach deliveries for Bookmobile and At Home Services
  6. The driver can expect to be exposed to outside weather conditions
  7. Office duties may include but may not be limited to,

                       Responsible for the collection of book drops

                       Update the bulletin board located at the Senior Center

                        Distribution of publicity material to various business and organizations throughout town

                        Loading and unloading the van and Bookmobile before and after stops

                        Shelving materials

                        Assist with maintaining the Little Free Libraries

                        Changing the circulation status of items and discarding items as directed

 

HOURS

15-19 Hours per week

Occasional nights and weekend hours 

 

Salary 

$26.66 an hour

 

 

 

Requires

  • High School Diploma or the equivalent
  • Six months recent experience operating a commercial vehicle i.e. bus, van, limousine, etc. preferred
  • Strong customer service skills

Essential Functions of the Job:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing direct patron service at community events or at an SCLSNJ service desk including reference and readers’ advisory services to the public and uses appropriate tools and resources to identify sources for customers; performing off-desk responsibilities; planning, promoting and implementing library programs that encourage library usage and supports the goals of the SCLSNJ Strategic Plan, community needs, and changes in the technology and trends in the library services; assisting with maintaining and promoting library collections; and performing other library-related tasks as assigned by supervisor or branch manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred; two years of related patron service, library, teaching or computer training experience, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities; reliable transportation to attend trainings, meetings, or other assigned duties at other branches or off-site locations as required.
