The South Brunswick Library, located halfway between the metropolitan hubs of NYC and Philadelphia, is home to a diverse, growing community that values all the services the Library provides. Our staff is dedicated to providing excellent customer service through innovative programming, community engagement and outreach, and our Mobile Branch.

Our Library is embarking on an $10.2 million construction project to expand and repurpose our existing building. We are excited to bring new team members aboard as we build our next chapter at the South Brunswick Public Library. Renovations will include a new auditorium, state-of-the art meeting room, an expanded Teen Room, group study rooms, an instruction lab and more.

The South Brunswick Public Library is looking for a creative, enthusiastic, self-motivated part-time librarian to join our team. The ideal candidate, under the direction of the Head of Children’s Services, will assist with readers’ advisory and customer service to children and caregivers. The librarian may be in charge of planning and presenting story time or weekend children’s events.  In addition, this individual will be required to perform a variety of professional duties at the Children’s Desk including maintaining children’s collection and assisting with additional events for children. 

Primary responsibilities:

  • Conduct reference interviews to determine customer’s information needs
  • Use the library’s automated catalog to perform item searches and place holds.
  • Advise and assist library customers in the use of library services and tools.
  • Train customers on the library’s electronic resources.
  • May plan, design, and implement age-appropriate events for children. 
  • Maintain assigned collection areas.

Requirements:

  • MLIS or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution and NJ Public Library Certification or enrollment in a graduate-level program from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Positive, pro-active attitude and ability to provide outstanding customer service
  • General knowledge of children’s literature
  • Some experience with children’s library programming preferred
  • Ability to develop a good rapport with children and caregivers to identify their needs and interests
  • Familiarity with technology and social media and the ability to adapt to changes in technology
  • Speak, write and communicate in English effectively

2024 starting rate for librarian: $31.39

2024 starting rate for Information Assistant (library degree in progress): $20.29

Library Director May 31, 2024

The Pequannock Twp. Public Library is seeking a dynamic Director for its vibrant community oriented library, located in suburban North Jersey. 

The library is the cultural and informational hub for a community of 15,157, ranging from many young families with children to 3,000 seniors in Cedar Crest Village. It provides professional services, collections, and technology tools to inform, enrich, educate, provide lifelong learning, and entertain our patrons. Our service-oriented staff includes 14 FTE's, 6 FT, and 4 MLS with collection: 78,500; circulation: 156,000; annual program attendance: 12,500. 

The town was originally settled by the Dutch in 1695, and its rich history is an integral part of library programming. A supportive library board, mayor and Township council enable the library to provide a wide spectrum of services, valued by the community. 

It is essential that the Director be community and service oriented, be visionary in developing programs for patrons of all ages, possess strong interpersonal and managerial skills, skilled in applying technology and social media for the benefit of the library, have experience in ongoing finance and budgeting, grants, fund raising, and planning, and be eager to coordinate future construction. 

The Pequannock Library is a member of Main Library Alliance. 

Requirements: ALA accredited MLS; NJ Professional Librarian Certification with 5 or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in a library setting.

Interim Library Director May 31, 2024

Position Title: Interim Director, Pequannock Township Public Library 

The Pequannock Twp. Public Library is seeking an Interim Director for its vibrant community-oriented library, located in suburban North Jersey. The library is the cultural and informational hub for a community of 15,500, ranging from many young families with children to 3,000 seniors in Cedar Crest Village. It provides professional services, collections, and technology tools to inform, enrich, educate, provide lifelong learning, and entertain our patrons. Our service-oriented staff includes 14 FTE's, 6 FT, and 4 MLS with collection: 78,500; circulation: 156,000; and annual program attendance: 12,500. The Pequannock Library is a member of Main Library Alliance. 

Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the seven-member Library Board of Trustees, the Interim Director is responsible for all library operations and overall administration and management of the library pending the selection of a full-time Director, although Interim Director may be considered for the full-time position, if interested. Specific areas of responsibility include board relations; planning, organization, and evaluation of library services; general administration and financial management; internal and external communications; and professional and staff development. 

Qualifications/Requirements: ALA accredited MLS; NJ Professional Librarian Certification with 5 or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in a library setting. Must successfully pass a criminal background check and reside in the state of New Jersey as required by the New Jersey First Act (R.S.52:14-7).

Bernards Township Library has an immediate opening for TWO (2) Library Assistants (Salary Grade Level 1).  

Schedule A is a 12-hour/week position (Monday 9am-1pm; Wednesday 5pm-9pm; Friday 1pm-5pm plus one Saturday and one Sunday per month).

Schedule B is a 17-hour/week position (Monday 9am-2pm; Wednesday 1pm-5pm; Thursday 5pm-9pm; Friday 1pm-5pm plus one Saturday and one Sunday per month).

The library is a vibrant and active cultural center that is highly valued by Township residents for its wide range of materials and services.

Principal Duties:

A successful applicant will work as a team player with other library staff members, be self-motivated with a willingness to learn, and strive to offer excellent customer service.  The candidate will report to the Children's Supervisor and perform a variety of general library clerical duties, including (but not limited to): checking library materials in and out, assisting the public in the use of library resources and equipment, issuing library cards, assisting with displays and crafts, and more.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to accurately perform a considerable volume of routine, detailed work.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrated capacity to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.
  • Complete ease in the use of computers and digital devices is essential.
  • Ability to readily adapt to a variety of assignments.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds and/or maneuver 50-pound book carts.
  • Ability to retrieve library materials from both high and low-level shelving.
  • Fluency in English sufficient to perform the duties of the position.
  • Experience with Polaris/Leap is desirable but not required.

Education & Experience:

High school graduation or equivalency along with previous library experience or some college or library courses.  Background in children's literature and knowledge of books/eBooks/movies, etc. helpful.  Fluency in other languages is a plus.

Full-Time Teen Librarian May 29, 2024

Full-Time Teen Librarian, Information Department at the  Clark Public Library

Location:  303 Westfield Avenue, Clark, NJ, 07066    

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week,including regular evenings and a four week weekend rotation. 

Job Description:  As a Teen Librarian at the Clark Public Library, you'll have the opportunity to inspire and empower young adults in our community. You'll develop and implement innovative programs and services specifically designed to engage teens. You’ll collaborate with youth services on intergenerational programming, creating opportunities for teens to connect with other age groups.

In addition to traditional library programming, you'll also spearhead crafting workshops where teens can unleash their creativity through activities such as DIY zine-making, jewelry crafting, and upcycling projects. Furthermore, you'll organize and facilitate RPG (role-playing game) sessions, providing a space for teens to immerse themselves in epic adventures and storytelling while developing critical thinking and teamwork skills.

Requirements: 

  • Open to New Jersey residents only. Out of state candidates may be considered but must reside in New Jersey by the first day of work
  • MLS / MLIS degree.  Library students within six months of graduation may be considered.
  • Candidates must possess or be eligible for a New Jersey Professional Librarian Certificate
  • Must be comfortable working with patrons of all ages
  • Previous experience working with teens in a library or educational setting
  • Strong knowledge of young adult literature, popular culture, crafting techniques, and RPG games
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Proficiency in technology and social media platforms
  • Creative and innovative approach to programming and service delivery
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required

Hours:   Full-time, 35 hours per week. Applicants must be available to work various shifts, including four evenings per month and one weekend rotation per month.  The library is closed on Sundays from May until Labor Day. 

Title: Ranked at Librarian 1 by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission. This is a union and civil service job.

Start Date:  Upon hire. The first 90 days of employment are provisional per the New Jersey Civil Service commission.
