The Scotch Plains Public Library is looking for one last Library Assistant to round out our Circulation team. If you want to work in a dynamic and supportive environment, we want to hear from you.

Schedule

Approximately 12-19 hours per week (evening and Saturday availability is required). Weekday shifts are scheduled on a static basis. Saturday shifts are scheduled on a rotating basis.

Job Summary

  • Performs procedures related to the circulation of materials, including but not limited to check in and out of library material, collection of fees and fines, registration of library patrons, renewing library patron cards, and shelving materials.
  • Performs general reception duties including fielding in-person and on the telephone informational and directional questions from patrons.
  • Must be able to exercise judgment in public service situations and be able to multitask as needed.
  • Works effectively and courteously with the general public and other employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Possess customer service experience in a library, office, or retail environment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office products.
  • Demonstrate strong phone, keyboarding, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to learn the library’s shelving and classification systems and shelve materials alphabetically and numerically.
  • Able to bend repeatedly, place items overhead and/or below waist level and transport library materials on a cart.

Part Time Librarian 1, West Windsor Branch, Mercer County Library System February 12, 2024

Please accept this as notification of the anticipated vacancy of the position of Part Time Librarian I at the West Windsor Branch, Mercer County Library System.  This 19 hour per week position during the school year requires the following schedule, Saturday 9-5, Sunday 12-5, and Monday 12:30-8:30. In the summer the Sunday hours shift to Friday.

The successful candidate should be enthusiastic, forward thinking, resourceful, flexible, efficient, conscientious, and detail-oriented.  The candidate should have excellent communication and customer service skills, exhibit friendly professionalism, be able to effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously, contribute new ideas that will help the branch to better serve its community, and provide outstanding reference service. 

The candidate will be expected to create/facilitate adult programming for a diverse public; assist the Virtual Programming Coordinator in discovering, scheduling and facilitating virtual programming; market programs and library services; and do outreach to the community.

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Searching the library catalog and locating library materials;
  • Accessing databases/other reference materials and demonstrating their use to patrons;
  • Answering reference questions presented in person, electronically, and by telephone;
  • Using a computer, scanner, copier, projector, and microfilm equipment;
  • Providing one-on-one technology sessions;
  • Providing readers’ advisory services and selecting library materials;
  • Contributing posts to the library blog and other library social media opportunities
  • Maintaining the library collections;
  • Assisting patrons in the operation of computers and computer software and providing appropriate instruction when needed;
  • Creating and providing publicity and programming, both in and outside the branch;
  • Participating in outreach activities to include physical outreach and participation in the library’s social media platforms, as well as writing posts for the blog.
  • Willingness to become a notary is desirable, because the branch has demand for notaries on the weekend.

Familiarity with the library system’s resources and social media platforms, including the website, prior to applying is strongly encouraged. Knowledge of current library technologies and the ability to use the library’s automated system, online resources, mobile applications, and Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel is a must.  This position requires an MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA accredited institution and a NJ Librarian’s Certification. Students enrolled in an MLS program with a significant amount of coursework completed may also be considered.

This position requires Mercer County residency. A full job description can be found on the State of New Jersey Civil Service Commission website. This title is covered under AFSCME local 3566.  The current salary range for the position is $23.1590 to $37.4038 per hour. Once certified into a permanent title, part time employees earn sick and vacation time, and are eligible to receive holiday pay. Reporting to the Head for Cataloging, Metadata & Archive Services, the Cataloging Librarian performs original and copy cataloging and classification of print and nonprint library materials, manages the holdings of electronic resources, creates and updates name authority records, and creates and maintains various collections in the University’s institutional repository (Digital Commons). Children's Librarian at Bayonne Public Library February 9, 2024

Children’s Librarian

Job Details:

Bayonne Public Library is a newly renovated, century-old Carnegie library interested in continuing to build a new, more active library culture in Bayonne. 

A large focus of this job is working closely with patrons, with an emphasis on children, to promote library collections & services, conduct reader’s advisory & reference services, and actively participate in creating, designing, and implementing new programs and services including toddler & preschool story times, arts & crafts programs, the summer reading program, and whatever other programs you imagine. 

Responsibilities will include providing support to the public & staff at the Children’s Room Desk, assisting patrons in selection & location of services and books, planning & conducting programs, coordinating with other staff for publicity of said programs, Children’s Room collection development & maintenance, creation & maintenance of seasonal displays of books & other media, and outreach to schools including coordination of class visits. 

Fluency in Arabic or Spanish would be a helpful skill, but is not required. Full-time, 35 hours per week, with two nights per week and 2 Saturdays per month.

Library Director at Spotswood Public Library February 8, 2024

Director, Spotswood Public Library

The Board of Trustees of the Spotswood Public Library (Spotswood, New Jersey)
is seeking a full-time library director who will be responsible for the administration
and management of the library.

Primary Responsibilities
This person will work collaboratively with the Library Board and a dedicated team
of 8-10 staff members to provide library services to the 8,400 residents of
Spotswood, NJ. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day
operations of the library, including representing the Library within the community,
supervising the staff, and managing the library.

The ideal candidate will have a MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited program and
five years of professional library experience with progressive administrative
responsibilities. Excellent leadership and communication skills, a visionary
perspective, innovative approaches to organizing and problem-solving,
knowledge of library trends and technology, and the ability to foster a cohesive
library team are a must.

Schedule: 35 hours per week, including occasional Saturdays and evening shifts.

Compensation
Salary Range is $65,000 - $70,000, depending on experience. Benefits include
health insurance, dental insurance, participation in the New Jersey Public
Employee Retirement System (PERS), paid vacation, paid sick leave, personal
days, and paid public holidays. The search process will remain open until the
position is filled. Preferred start date of March 5, 2024 or sooner.

The Tinton Falls Public Library, a Member Library of the Monmouth County Library (MCL) system, in Tinton Falls, NJ seeks an energetic, part-time Library Assistant to join our staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Charging and discharging library materials
  • Answering patron questions in person and on the phone
  • Issuing new library cards
  • Accepting payment for library fees
  • Shelving books, straightening, and organizing shelves
  • Preparing and repairing library materials for circulation
  • Assisting with programs as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED. Associate degree preferred.
  • Strong customer service skills

Library Director Position at Tinton Falls Public Library February 8, 2024

The Tinton Falls Public Library, a Member Library of the Monmouth County Library (MCL) system, in Tinton Falls, NJ seeks a full-time Library Director to lead our staff and engage our growing community after a long-term closure.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Direct daily library operations and manage staff and volunteers.
  • Develop and coordinate innovative and engaging programs for adults and children.
  • Promote library via social media, (WIX-based) website, and in-person events.
  • Develop and expand collection with input from MCL.
  • Cultivate and maintain partnerships with Borough, school, and community organizations.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and patrons.
  • Report to the Library Board at its monthly meetings (according to the Board’s current schedule).

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library science (or equivalent) from American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution preferred, but not required
  • 3 to 5 years of work experience in a public or academic library
  • 1 to 2 years supervisory experience preferred, but not required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong technology and social media skills (Windows environment)
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to repetitively bend and lift up to 25 lbs.

Schedule: Salaried position (37.5 – 40 hours) including days, evenings, and Saturday hours. This position may include provisions to work remotely up to 8 hours/week. Specific schedule to be determined with Board approval as the Library is reopening after a long-term closure.

Compensation: $50-60,000 commensurate with experience. Salary negotiable if benefits needed.
