Summary:

 

Under the direction of a professional librarian, supports the technical or public service aspects of one or more library programs such as the development and maintenance of digital and print collections and the delivery of customer service to library users; does other related work.

Examples of Work:

 

  • Confers with a professional librarian or other supervisory official regarding the establishment of proper standards and recommendations for the organization and implementation of the technical aspects of the library or program area.
  • Under the direction of a professional librarian does the work involved in recommending, checking, and purchasing library materials or equipment related to digitization work
  • Updates library metadata records.
  • Takes the lead in tasks assigned to support staff.
  • Participates in the training of patrons and staff on the use of library resources.
  • Provides good customer service at public access points.
  • Participates in library committees and teams.
  • Answers basic reference questions.
  • Prepares library content for digital displays and exhibits.
  • Use online resources to maintain catalog/metadata systems including corrections, additions, new copies and/or editions and removal of items from inventory.
  • Prepares correspondence.
  • Prepares technical, financial, statistical and other reports.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic systems used within the library

 

Education: 

 

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

 

License:

 

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in the State of New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

 

Knowledge and Abilities:

 

  • Knowledge of techniques used to gather data and information.
  • Knowledge of metadata schemas and digital library infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of camera systems and photo editing software
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to instruct others in the use of digital equipment and processing software.
  • Ability to maintain records and files.
  • Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Job Description for Library Associate in State Library Information Center:

 

  • Under the direction of a professional librarian, create or copy metadata for the New Jersey State Publications Digital Library;
  • Under the direction of a professional librarian, digitize items using scanners or cameras and upload them to the digital library;
  • Under librarian supervision, assess and inventory assigned collections for unique content designated for digitization;
  • Capture born digital items from select government websites and upload them to the digital library;
  • Support the maintenance of assigned LibGuides;
  • Assist with maintaining physical collection;
  • Provide coverage within the Circulation unit;
  • Participate in library committees and teams;
  • Answer basic reference questions under the supervision of a professional librarian;
  • Use the online catalog to check-in, correct, add links or remove items from inventory;
  • Maintain statistical reports;
  • Develop proficiency in use of library’s subscription databases.

Employees hired prior to September 1, 2011, who transfer from within the University/New Jersey State Library, or from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than 7 days but who reside outside of the State of New Jersey, are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the Act.
