Substitute Librarian, Piscataway Public Library
Description:
The Piscataway Public Library seeks a Substitute Librarian. Typical shifts are Monday-Thursday (10AM-1:30PM); (1:30-5PM); and (5PM-9PM); Friday (10AM-1:30PM) and (1:30-5PM); Saturdays (9:45AM-5:15PM) and Sundays (1-5PM). Shifts may be on call or scheduled to cover regular staff’s absences. The substitute librarian may be asked to cover the Adult Services, Teen, or Children’s information desks.
Responsibilities:
- Effectively offering assistance to meet the informational needs of users of all ages, by providing reference, readers’ advisory, and computer support while employing a welcoming demeanor and practicing effective interviewing skills to best determine the patron’s needs
- Provides basic troubleshooting on in-house computers
Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited program and NJ Professional Librarian’s Certificate. Candidates completing their MLS by December 2024 will be considered for the Information Assistant/Library Associate title until degree and certification are received.
- Demonstrated experience in the following areas: customer service and providing reference and technology assistance
- Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively with library patrons and staff
Computer Skills:
- Competency in the use of the latest relevant technology to manage and deliver information services
- The ability to use library automation software and G-Suite applications
Compensation:
$37.98 per hour (31.99 for MLS matriculated student candidates)

- All Piscataway Township employees are subject to the successful completion of a 3-month performance evaluation period
- Offers of employment will be conditional pending the completion of a criminal background check and drug screening as part of pre-employment procedures
- It is the Township’s policy that all new employees must, as a condition of employment, be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, up to date on eligible booster doses
