Librarian/Graduate Student (Children’s Services)
Part-time, 10-13 hours per week
Schedule: Sunday afternoons, Monday and Wednesday nights

The South Brunswick Library is seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated part-time librarian or MLIS student to join our creative Children’s Services team. This a perfect opportunity to join our team as we embark on an $11 million plus library expansion/renovation project with a new auditorium for special library events, a state-of-the art-auditorium, an expanded teen area, and more.

The ideal candidate, under the direction of the Head of Children’s Services, will assist with readers’ advisory, help plan events, answer reference questions from both students and parents, and provide excellent customer service to our diverse community. This is a perfect opportunity for a librarian looking for an additional income or a library school student looking to gain experience in the field.   Opportunities for additional hours on an as-needed basis are likely.

The South Brunswick Library, located halfway between the metropolitan hubs of NYC and Philadelphia, is home to a diverse, growing community that values all the services the Library provides. Our staff is dedicated to providing excellent customer service through innovative programming, community engagement and outreach, and our Mobile Branch.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Conduct reference interviews to determine customer’s information needs
  • Use the library’s automated catalog to perform item searches and place holds.
  • Advise and assist library customers in the use of library services and tools.
  • Train customers on the library’s electronic resources.
  • May plan, design, and implement age-appropriate events for children. 
  • Maintain assigned collection areas.

Requirements:

  • MLIS or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution and NJ Public Library Certification or enrollment in a graduate-level program from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Positive, pro-active attitude and ability to provide outstanding customer service
  • General knowledge of children’s literature
  • Some experience with children’s library programming preferred
  • Ability to develop a good rapport with children and caregivers to identify their needs and interests
  • Familiarity with technology and social media and the ability to adapt to changes in technology
  • Speak, write and communicate in English effectively

2024 starting rate for librarian: $31.39. 

2024 starting rate for Information Assistant (library degree in progress): $20.29. Salary would increase to librarian rate after completion of degree.
