Multilingual Glossary of Terms

Understanding library jargon—OPAC, CD-ROM, microfiche, holdings, stacks, etc.—can be difficult for anyone who is not a regular user of the library. The difficulty of understanding library terms is compounded for English as a second-language (ESL) speakers who must process these specialized terms in a language that is not their native one. Created by the Association of College & Research Libraries, this Multilingual Glossary is designed to assist ESL speakers, as well as the librarians who work with them. It consists of eighty-five (85) of the most commonly used terms in academic libraries today.

Josey, E. J., & DeLoach, M., Eds. (2000). Handbook of Black librarianship. Lanham, MD: Scarecrow.

This landmark work treats diversity, African Americans in librarianship and in library education, issues related to technology, and library services to African American populations. “Of special interest is the section on African American resources, which covers archival and fugitive literature, library holdings, literature, oral history programs, and museums, with several chapters on awards.” Rutgers Professor Mark Winston’s chapter, “Establishing African American Collections” is particularly valuable.
