This position will include program planning and staffing the circulation desk.
Please note the Bellevue Avenue Branch is a historic building that is not ADA accessible.
PARTIAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
- Responsible for reader’s advisory and adult reference services using the full range of resources available including Internet, databases, indexes, periodicals, directories, reference, and circulating books.
- Assist users in selecting materials for informational or entertainment purposes.
- Instruct patrons on how to locate information and maximize the use of resources.
- Answer reference questions covering a wide range of difficulty.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the resources and services provided through the New Jersey State Library and BCCLS (Bergen County Cooperative of Libraries).
- Provide input to the Collection Development Department based knowledge of patron interests and current literature across all media formats.
- Provide formal and informal training and instruction in the effective use of electronic resources for the public.
- Plan and handle arrangements and scheduling for adult programming. Includes publicity, flyers, etc.
- Reports to the Bellevue Ave. Branch Manager.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
- Maintain good housekeeping practices and perform in a safe and effective manner so as not to inflict injury to self or others. Inform proper authority of any hazardous situations in the work environment.
- Clearly communicate and enforce the policies and procedures adopted by the Montclair Public Library.
- Support the library’s mission, vision and values, as well as a commitment to the community served by the library.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of current events, popular and local culture.
- Knowledge of the theories, objectives, principles and techniques of librarianship.
- High level of online skills such as internet searches, social media, desktop applications, websites.
- Working knowledge of BCCLS ILS (Polaris and Leap).
- Ability to utilize the full resources of BCCLS, including the web catalog, digital resources, eBooks, and downloadable materials.
- Ability to utilize the full resources of the New Jersey State Library, e.g., Jersey Clicks, resources for the hearing and sight impaired, historical information.
- Presents welcoming behaviors and practices effective interviewing skills to best determine the patron's actual information needs.
- Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and a diverse and varied clientele.
QUALIFICATIONS

MLS with NJ Certification, or BA/BS with library degree in progress.

Minimum of one year of library or customer service experience.

Current knowledge of library trends and innovations.

Salary: $16.47 (library students), $30.19 per hour (graduate level library degree)
