Borrower Services Part-time Library Assistant - Montclair Public Library

Under the supervision of the Borrower Services Department Head, performs a variety of routine library tasks.

Up to 18 hours per week.

Hours include regular Saturdays or Sundays and some evenings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Charge and discharge library materials, collect fees, register new patrons and issue library cards.

  • Perform steps that support the reciprocal borrowing loan programs among all libraries in BCCLS.

  • Maintain order by sorting and filing, putting books and other materials in their proper places and re-shelving returned material.

  • Process and/or link periodicals or other materials.

  • Accept reserves and inter-library loan requests for library materials and notify patrons when items are available.

  • Assist the public in use of library resources and equipment.

  • Answer questions on library activities, holdings, policies and procedures.

  • Answering the phone and using exceptional customer service to handle inquiries and provide assistance.

  • Handle overdue notices in accordance with library policy.

  • Prepare books and other library materials for the collection including unpacking and checking packing lists, labeling, marking, pocketing, mending and reinforcing.

  • As one of the busiest municipal libraries in the state enthusiasm, energy, and excitement are a must for staff members. Residency in the State of New Jersey will be required in accordance with New Jersey Revised Statutes §52:14-7.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Borrower Services Department Head.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and stooping.

  • Bending/twisting and reaching.

  • Talking and hearing; use of the telephone.

  • Lifting and carrying: 50 pounds or less.

  • Handling: processing, picking up and shelving books

  • Fingering: typing, writing, filing, sorting, shelving and processing.

  • Pushing and pulling: book truck weighing 60-80 pounds on wheels.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Communication skills: effectively communicate ideas and information both in written and oral form.

  • Reading ability: effectively read and understand information contained in memoranda, reports and bulletins, etc.

  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions: effectively follow instructions from supervisor, verbally and in written form.

  • Mathematical ability: calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) without the aid of a calculator.

  • Time management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.

EXPECTED COMPETENCIES

  • Proficiency in using computers and navigating internet browsers, as well as operating other office equipment such as copy machines.

  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public and to maintain effective working relationships with other library staff.

  • Ability to maintain established library records and files.

  • High ability to organize material and attention to detail. The ability to handle details with accuracy and completeness is essential.

  • Ability to learn quickly from oral, written and/or demonstrated instructions.

  • Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues and patrons.

  • Knowledge and understanding of library’s mission, goals and objectives.

  • Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret regulations, policies and procedures of the library and explain them to the public.

  • Ability and willingness to continue to develop additional skills and library knowledge through on-the-job training, classes, or online tutorials.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Some college or library courses, and/or library or other customer service experience desired.

  • Familiarity with computers.

  • Salary $17.37 per hour
