Duties

East Brunswick Public Library, an innovative library serving a diverse community in central New Jersey, is searching for a Consumer Health Librarian who is passionate about public libraries and their role in building healthy communities. The Consumer Health Librarian oversees the library’s nationally recognized “Just for the Health of It” health literacy initiative; researches health information for patrons; attends library outreach events; and provides quality, multidisciplinary reference service to the public at the Information Desk.  Responsibilities would include managing the library’s diverse suite of health programs by nurturing ongoing partnerships with local hospitals, doctors, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, nonprofit organizations and healthcare providers. The librarian also manages the “Just for the Health of It” (justforthehealthofit.org) health portal and works closely with the library’s web developer to maintain the portal. The librarian also participates in any grant-funded activities.

The librarian must understand new and emerging technologies to perform daily activities. These include, but are not limited to, databases, health websites, Drupal, Zoom, electronic journals, eBooks, and mobile devices. The librarian possesses strong communication skills and is expected to perform public speaking when introducing health programs, doing presentations to organizations and students, and interacting with healthcare professionals and the public.

The librarian exhibits a patient and compassionate demeanor that is necessary to communicate health information with a highly diverse and multicultural community. The librarian has strong organizational skills, the ability to create spreadsheets and maintain statistics, and the ability to work without oversight. The position requires occasional travel to participate in outreach community events to promote library programs and grant initiatives. This position will require regular evening and weekend shifts.

Educational Experience

Candidates must have completed an accredited MLS program. The position requires a commitment to professional development and the attainment of Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) Level 2 certification through the Medical Library Association within the first year of service. The librarian will need to master Drupal, an open-source content management system, to maintain the health portal. Training in Drupal will be given by the library’s web developer.  Experience running library programs, public speaking, or prior work experience in any area of public health is desirable but not necessary.
