Project Management Fundamental 101

What to expect:

Project Management is becoming an increasingly relevant skill in a business environment where deadlines and budgets define success or failure. In this short course, we have tailored our Project Management course specifically to the needs of running a successful project within the context of a Library environment. Over two day-long sessions, you will learn how manage a project by applying basic project frameworks and tools such as the Triple Constraint and Scope Decomposition to author essential Project Management documents such as a Project Charter, Work Breakdown Structure and Project Schedule.

Program Contents:

0. Introduction:
In this section, we cover the basic definition of Project and Program Management, the importance of Project Management and learning objectives of this course.

1. How to start a Project:
How do we ask the right questions and collect all the relevant information up front? In this section we go through a checklist of items that can help us to understand what the project is about and what we need to do to achieve project success.

  • Identify the customer and the goals
  • Identifying what you'll deliver
  • Definition of Success vs Failure
  • Defining the scope of the project
  • Project Risks and Constraints
  • Documenting assumptions
  • What is the right level of project management
  • Obtaining Signoff
  • The Project Charter: Putting it all together

2. Getting Organized:
In this section we look at a systematic approach for building a strong structure around the project that ensures that people involved in the project know what to do and when to do it. We also learn how to anticipate when circumstances or events that are out of our control change.

  • Collaborating
  • Identifying the work
  • Estimating time and cost
  • Building your team
  • Scheduling work
  • Making sure the schedule works

3. Project Real Life Examples:
Based on popular demand, we are devoting a significant portion of the course to go over prior year projects conducted at Libraries. During the course, you will have the opportunity to work directly with the instructor on your own project idea, create and submit a project proposal or charter.

4. Real Life Project Management Tools:

The instructor will devote additional time with attendees on a demonstration of popular Project Management applications like Basecamp and Asana. Use these demos to kickstart your Projects with the right tools.
